PENGARUH SKARIFIKASI TERHADAP PERKECAMBAHAN BENIH KOPI LIBERIKA (Coffea liberica Bull ex Hiern)

Abstract


Liberica coffee seeds germinate under optimum conditions for 8-12 weeks because Liberica coffee seeds have an exocarp and undergo physical dormancy. Breaking physical dormancy can be done by means of physical and chemical scarification. The purpose of this study was to obtain the best scarification technique for the germination of Liberica coffee seeds. This research method used was an experimental methode with a completely randomized design (CRD), which scarification technique consists of 4 levels, namely P0 = Whole coffee seeds / without treatment (control), P1 = Coffee seeds are sanded on the entire skin, P2 = Coffee seeds are given an opening with nail scissors on the skin, P3 = Coffee seeds are peeled all parts of the skin. Each treatment was repeated five times, resulting in 20 experimental units. Each unit used 100 coffee seeds, with a total of  2.000 seeds. Parameters observed were time to sprout, germination, vigor index, and maximum growth potential. The results of the study showed that the best scarification technique for germination of Liberica coffee seeds was the treatment of coffee seeds peeled all over the skin, where this treatment gave the highest results on the parameters of germination, time to sprout, vigor index, and maximum growth potential.
